I have provided a section on your problem that may help you, but there are some other things that you can do to help yourself right now. Modern science is just discovering that there are some simple activities that you can do to improve your situation. Some of these strategies are very simple and others are more complex, but they all work if you will keep an open mind and give it a try.
  1. Educate yourself about what you suspect your problem might be - it needs a label.
  2. Explain your symptoms to a doctor or mental health professional. Have a complete physical.
  3. Take a fast walk every day for 30 minutes to release endorphins (a natural high).
  4. You know, people used to think that this was sort of a good idea, but recent medical evidence proves itís an incredibly good idea! Recent studies have proven beyond any scientific doubt that, if you do this regularly, the mood elevating endorphins that pour into your bloodstream are just as effective or even more so than Zoloft or Prozac (2 powerful antidepressant drugs). The endorphins are not released for the average person until about the 15 or 20 minute mark of doing some form of aerobic exercise - it takes this long to get them released. These endorphins will stay in your bloodstream until it is time to take your next daysí walk. If you continue to do this on a daily basis, you will just naturally start to feel much better.

    You know, when you think about it, itís a great deal. 30 minutes a day out in the fresh air or up on your stationary bike will not only burn off fat, tone muscle, and lower your blood pressure, but it will also have you feeling great. I know this works, because I am a runner and I have been running for 40 years, just as much to improve my mind and mood as for the physical benefits. I will often be reluctant after a busy day to take a run. I often think, "wow," I am dealing with stressful problems and I just do not feel like doing this stupid run. But you know what? I have found out over the years that the very best thing you can do when your in that frame of mind is - take that stupid walk or run. Itís amazing. By the time that you are through, you are just feeling so much better - it is hard to describe but it is real. The problems have not changed, the stress is still their, but "wow!!!" I am just not bothered by them like I was 30 minutes ago. What a great health deal - AND ITíS FREE! You may find that if you do this regularly that you may be able to reduce your medications - but always check with your doctor first! Do you want expensive drugs like Prozac or Zoloft in your body with, often, nasty side effects WHEN YOU COULD HAVE THIS GREAT FORM OF MOOD ELEVATION FOR FREE?

    Well, I have said enough about this. I do hope you will seriously give it a try. You do not have to run - a brisk walk is all that is necessary. Any form of aerobic activity will do just as long as you get your heartbeat up and maintain it there for 30 minutes or so for 3 or 4 times a week. It's easier than you think!!!   5. Give your body and your mind a break and be sure they get the rest they need.
  6. Be sure you are getting enough sleep. Most people need 7 to 9 hours nightly. Go to bed earlier and let your body get up when it has had enough sleep. Your body will tell you how much sleep it wants.

    Learn to relax by using meditation, self-hypnosis, deep breathing, tai chi, etc.

  7. Keep your brain active.
  8. Keep learning. Watching endless hours of T.V. is passive - your brain vegetates. Play cards, go bowling, knit, do crosswords, learn a new language, learn to play chess or bridge, meet new people, take a course in something that really interests you. Thatís how you have a great old age. I hope you take me seriously because this could change your life around.
  9. Exercise your funny bone.
  10. This is a little harder for most folks. Make yourself watch comedies, especially the type of humour that does not injure or malign others. Learn to tell good jokes. Norman Cosens was expected to die of a serious disease in the 1950ís, so he checked himself out of the hospital and into a nearby hotel. He continued to accept medical treatment as an outpatient and continuously watched 16mm. funny movies. His doctor supported this radical move. He recovered! HUMOUR SAVED HIS LIFE. You can never smile or laugh enough, so give it a try!
  11. Improve your self talk.
  12. Don't be overly critical with yourself - we all make mistakes. Start treating yourself like a good friend.
  13. Give someone you care about 4 hugs a day - if they want the hugs - and ask for them back.
  14. This is not being silly. Homo Sapiens is a tactile creature and our North American society stays away from hugging. Did you know that if infants and orphans do not get physically touched they just go insane. We are hard wired for hugs - we need them to be healthy. Dr. Leo Buscaglia was know as Dr. Hug because he would prescribe 4 hugs a day.

    Just like the release of endorphins when you walk for 30 minutes, this cooperative hugging releases even more endorphins. It does not matter whether you feel grouchy or miserable. When you ask for a hug, you are going to feel better, whether you believe me or not. Do it four times a day and you will feel even better.

    Remember, if you want to hug someone, ask them first - and do not proceed unless they agree. You should feel free to ask for a hug when you need it and hopefully you will get it. Of course all this hugging goes on between people who are pretty familiar with each other. I just assume you would not hug a stranger on the street, or that the gals would not be just hugging some handsome guy, or the guys looking for some pretty girl to hug. That is not exactly what I had in mind. On second thought, maybe that is not such a bad idea - explain to him or her that it is a new type of therapy? (just kidding)

  15. Practice smiling at people.
  16. You don't need a reason to smile - just do it! They smile back. It's fun! You will be amazed at their response!!!
  17. Drink more water!!!
  18. Your body is 80% water and to keep it healthy you need to drink 8 - 10 glasses of water every day. Most people are moderately dehydrated and not functioning properly and they do not even know it. Excessive alcohol, coffee and soft drinks consumption will dehydrate you. You do not have to carry a little bottle of water with you everywhere that you go, just drink more water when you get the chance.
  19. Improve your eating habits.
  20. We are surrounded with fast food outlets that sell nothing but fat and grease. Our body only needs about 30 grams of fat a day but the chances are you are like everyone else, eating at least 150 grams of fat daily. If you pay attention to the amount of fat that you are eating, it will pay off. Eat more vegetables and fruits, as well as leaner meats or fish.
I KNOW THAT YOU ARE PROBABLY GOING TO READ THIS AND ADMIT, "he is right," BUT THEN - DO NOTHING.

You will probably agree that they are pretty good ideas and move on - still suffering, maybe hoping for a magic pill that will take your pains away. You know what? YOU HAVE GOT TO DO SOMETHING PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE TO GET OVER YOUR PROBLEMS and it can be as easy as making up your mind here and now that you will take that regular walk, or go hug crazy, or make an effort to laugh and smile.

It works even when your heart is not in it - fake it till you make it. Come on - give it a try.
